A portal to the center of the Earth
The swerve dimensions of this place are enough to inspire wonder : at 994 feet wide and over 1,200 feet deep, it is the largest known cave cheat in the earth. Like a portal to the center of the earth ! Descending into its depths is a privilege reserved for technical speleologists, but there is much more that you can do at this target.
Every day –except when it ’ sulfur rain or there is cold weather–, the birds and flying mammals that sleep inside the erect cave haste out of it with the identical first gear rays of sunlight, flying in concentric circles. queerly enough, there aren ’ t any swallows at this site. It is flocks of swifts, parrots and even bats that populate it. The fly creatures fly in groups, making circles until they reach the highest steer and then leave to hunt for food. They all come back correct before the sun disappears in the horizon. This natural picture will take your breath away !

The cave was formed through the office of erosion over millions of years, as water carved its way across the limestone. however, angstrom incredible as it may seem, it was largely strange to the average mexican before 1966, when it was inaugural spotted by scientists from the University of Texas. The site is listed as one of Mexico ’ s 13 natural wonders and it was declared a Natural Protected Area in 2001 .

If you visit the Sótano de las Golondrinas, as it is known is spanish, you can spot another bang-up natural wonder that is very close : the majestic Tamul Waterfalls .
precisely 15 miles from the cave, these stunning waterfalls pour over the Tampaon River, which you must navigate through on wooden canoes to get to them. The river ’ second flow is fairly ennoble, at least up until you approach the waterfalls, where things turn a little morsel intense, but not besides much, loosen !
As you contemplate the 345 feet grandiloquent waterfalls, the strait and mist produced by them will engulf you in a rather humid and refreshing know .

How to get to the Cave of Swallows
The nearest cities to the caves are Ciudad Valles and San Luis Potosi, the state das kapital. From both of them, you can catch a bus topology to Aquismon, a small town that is very close to the site. once you ’ re in Aquismon, you won ’ triiodothyronine have a hard time finding a tour operator that will safely take you to the cave and back .

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
