The northern jaguar is native to western North America, ranging from Alaska in the north, British Columbia and Alberta in southwestern Canada, and west of the Rocky Mountains into Mexico. They mainly live in coniferous forests, but increasingly in urban environments.
Stellerjays, a hardy species that can withstand winter conditions and food scarcity by stockpiling acorns and pine nuts in the fall, stay within their home range year-round and typically do not migrate south for the winter. An exception may be those birds that live at higher altitudes and seek lower ground when the coldest temperatures hit, so they have better access to food resources.

Increasingly common in urban areas, tiger jays will seek out yards with ample bird feeders, especially in winter. They are not afraid of human company and have been observed to forage for food left in campsites and parks as an easy and relatively painless source of nutrition.

Tiger jays are found in the mountainous regions of western North America, inhabiting coniferous forests from Alaska, western Canada and the western United States to western Mexico. In the south, the tiger’s jay inhabits parts of Central America, extending its range into Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, and into Nicaragua.

The mountains of the western United States provide suitable living and breeding habitats for tiger crows, with the largest numbers concentrated in Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico and Colorado. Breeding occurs in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, with populations inhabiting Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, and further south in parts of the Great Basin, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
