Although the film never outwardly declares that Nina is suffering from an eating disorder, scenes highlighting caloric restriction and purging allude to a struggle with anorexia. The accompanying hallucinations, paranoia, and self-harm suggest extra abnormal psychology, but the film highlights the dangerous course in the dance worldly concern towards taking extreme measures to achieve a flimsy human body. Body specific stereotypes such as a flat chest and protruding ribs exist in the dance world, which can potentially lead to serious risks .
While a lean human body is necessary to achieve the high technical demands of pointe sour and public address system de deux, the extremely thin skeletal system of today ’ sulfur dancers, popularized by the applaud choreographer George Balanchine, can create an impossible standard for women. Ballet emphasizes the lines and forms created by the human torso accentuating grace and smasher. For this reason, the “ ideal ” ballerina body type is characterized by exacting proportions : long, list leg, short torso, and a long neck. flush “ Black Swan ” accentuates the farseeing, lean form of a dancer by using limited effects to alter the already slender Portman. In many scenes her hands and fingers were elongated, the duration of her neck was emphasized, and her start shoulder blades were enhanced. This conventionalized body type is perpetuated throughout the dance earth .
A ballerina strives for perfection in her technique and performance ; it only seems lifelike that compulsive perfection can spill into other areas of life as well. This is a gamble for those in this elect profession of athletes. Ballerinas constantly practice in front of instructors with mirrors flanking the walls ; their bodies are the tools of their art form and consequently are often critiqued and reviewed as if inanimate paintings. This ceaseless compulsion surrounding one ’ s appearance, along with the dancer ’ s natural inclination toward perfectionism, puts the dancer at an raise risk for developing a negative body image and insalubrious corrode habits. If an eat perturb does develop, it can lead to many other negative effects. Particularly, women must be aware of low bone concentration and amenorrhea, which can be damaging not only to a dancer ’ s career, but more importantly, to her health.

“ Black Swan ” concludes with Nina ’ s chilling words, “ I was perfect ” —an admirable ambition besides frequently internalized by dancers. It is extremely crucial that as an consultation we encourage ballet and its progress but try to better understand the singular pressures of the artwork shape. While we must not be agile to judge that all ballerinas have eating disorders, we must realize that this is a problem plaguing the dance community, and we should support efforts such as providing nutritional and psychological support for dancers at all levels, training choreographers and teachers to be mindful of and sensitive to emergent eating disorders, and empowering parents to “ have the conversation ” with officials of a dance educate or company if they feel their daughter or son is being led down a dangerous path towards insalubrious weight control .

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
