The largest whale shark ever recorded was 61.7 feet long. Each letter in the famous Hollywood Sign is only 49 feet tall! On average, though, these gentle giants tend to be between 18 and 32.8 feet long, and a 30-foot whale shark was spotted in the summer of 2021. But what about when they were first born? The mouth of a whale shark alone is four feet wide. Unlike many sharks you may be familiar with, such as the great white, due to their tiny teeth, whale sharks only eat plankton and small animals such as shrimp.

While it’s definitely impressive in size, the whale shark has an unacceptably heavy weight. An adult whale shark weighing 41,000 pounds, or three African elephant.

Because it has a skeleton made of cartilage rather than real bone, it’s hard to know how long the whale shark really was in the past, even if only a few decades ago. However, if they were anything like the whale sharks we see today, they were also one of the largest animals around!

If you’ve ever wanted to take an immersive trip underwater, look no further than the back of a whale shark. Not only do you not have to worry about them eating you, but at their size, they can take you and 71 of your friends on the deep sea adventure of a lifetime!

The average whale shark is 32 feet long, almost six times the height of an adult.largest whale shark ten times same size. Only one whale shark fin is nearly 5 feet tall (extra cargo space for youth passengers on the Deep Sea Express)!

However, while whale sharks are impressive enough in comparison to humans—after all, can you imagine Swim next to one of these gentle giants – their weight counts. A whale shark can weigh up to 275 people. That’s roughly the same population as Bombay Beach, California!

Basking sharks vs.whale shark size

Basking sharks and whale sharks are similar in many ways. For one, they share similar diets, both eating more marine small animals than their top predator cousins. What else do they have in common? their size!

The largest basking shark was about 39 feet long, meaning it was right in the middle of the likely length of a whale shark, but larger than a typical whale shark. However, it is more likely to find an adult of about 25 feet, which is still nearly neck-and-neck with a whale shark.

However, while these two gentle sharks are comparable in size, weight is where the difference lies.

The average basking shark weighs about 11,000 pounds, or about the same as some types of RVs.Compared with whale sharks, it may need to be closer Four A basking shark weighs as much as a very large adult whale shark.that’s what we say trembling!

Biggest predatory shark vs. biggest shark: There’s no question that it’s a tough competition. This time, however, it’s safe to say the whale sharks won — just won fin.

The Great White Shark didn’t get its name for nothing. These top marine predators can grow up to 21 feet long and weigh up to 5,000 pounds. That’s about twice the size of the 10-foot containers you see on ships.

However, while they do earn their place as the largest predatory sharks, they don’t come close to whale sharks. In fact, it would probably take nearly 8 of the largest great whites to be the same weight as a large adult whale shark, although they are not that far apart in length.

When you see animals as big as whale sharks, it’s hard to compare them to anything other than a bus. After all, the bus may be one of the few things we’re all familiar with that can rival the sheer size of the whale shark. But just how accurate is this whale shark size comparison?

Turns out you need several buses to be as big as a whale shark!

The average length of a school bus is 40 feet, although some can be as small as 20 feet. While that’s about the same length as the average whale shark, it’s still a fraction of the weight of the largest whale shark ever recorded.

And, like the great white shark, while the school bus may rival the average whale shark in size, it’s not even a competition when it comes to weight. The average school bus in the United States weighs about 24,387 pounds, just over half that of a whale shark. Even with 72 passengers on board, the school bus was no match for a whale shark. Talk about gentle giants!

IAN WARKENTIN

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.

Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
