Frogbills – They’ve become surprisingly popular in recent years. Why? Because a much-publicized study by the Experimental Aesthetics Group at the University Hospital Jena in Germany found them to be “the most Instagrammable bird.” Researchers analyzed 27,000 photos of birds and found that frogbill likes correlate with exposure.
These dark, well-camouflaged birds are furry and are often confused with owls, despite their front-facing eyes and many different morphological features. Like owls, they are primarily nocturnal, but are more closely related to nightjars.
This post is about tawny frogbill chicks, and there will be lots of photos along the way!
What does a Tawny Frogmouth chick look like?
Tawny frogbills are medium-sized, stout birds with large, owl-like heads. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their name, they have broad, frog-like mouths.
When they hatch, the tawny frogbill chicks have very thick and fluffy bright white undercoat. Their white down is very similar to that of an owl, but again, the frog’s mouth is not related to an owl.
Unlike well-camouflaged adults, very young frogs look like little white balls of fur and are easy to spot. To keep the chicks hidden, one of their parents sits on the nest all day to hide them and keep them warm. Small tawny frogmouths have large, beaded eyes and a large mouth, which makes them very distinctive – or “on Instagram”!

After about two weeks, the chick has grayish undercoat and its first young needle feathers. After a month, the chicks are still fluffy but starting to turn black. Chicks take about 5 weeks to feather, at which point they are about half their adult body weight.
Juvenile tawny frogmouths remain lighter than adults and retain some of their fluffier, scruffy plumage until they molt into full-fledged adult frogmouths.

How big is a baby tawny frogfish?
The small tawny frogmouth is tiny, only a few inches long or less.
As adults, these birds measure 34 to 53 centimeters (13 to 21 inches) and weigh up to 680 grams (1.50 pounds).
What does the juvenile tawny frog mouth look like?
Juvenile tawny frog-billed frogs begin to shed their fuzz after about 4 weeks and emerge after 4 to 5 weeks.
They gradually darken, from white to light gray, then dark gray and brown. However, it’s worth mentioning that there are three different color morphs with slightly different plumage colors and patterns. Some variants are much lighter than others.
In general, juveniles are slightly lighter than adults, and their feathers are lighter, fluffier, and more scruffy. They retain some downy feathers for several months until they fully molt into their adult plumage.

What do you call a baby tawny frogmouth?
The small tawny frogbill has no specific name. Usually, newly hatched chicks are called hatchers.
Young birds in the nest are called fledglings, and once they learn to fly and leave the nest, they are called fledglings. Young birds are called juveniles.
Tawny frogbill chicks born at JSA’s Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, FL are called “Furbies,” which seems like an appropriate nickname given their fluffy white undercoat!
What do Tawny Frogmouth chicks eat?
The tawny frog-billed frog is a carnivore that feeds almost exclusively on insects, arthropods, and various invertebrates, including moths, spiders, worms, slugs, snails, bugs, flies, beetles, wasps, ants, centipedes, millipedes , even scorpions. Their voracious appetite makes them excellent pest controllers!
Juvenile tawny frog-billed frogs have a diet similar to that of adult frogs, but usually feed on softer invertebrates such as insects and worms. They are also fed partially regurgitated food from the adult’s crop, which is an extension of the stomach.
Adult tawny frogmouths also eat small lizards, frogs, and occasionally mice.

How do Tawny Frogmouths feed their chicks?
Tawny frog-billed frog parents feed their chicks whole and partially digested food that is regurgitated from their crop, an extension of the stomach.
Anecdotal observations by birders have shown that the tawny frogmouths form food pellets in their beaks, which they then pass into the chicks’ beaks.
Chicks may be fed smaller soft insects such as flies and invertebrates such as worms until they are old enough to eat larger insects.

Do both parents feed the baby the tawny frogmouth?
Both parents feed the chicks. Tawny Frog-billed Frogs are monogamous and form strong long-term bonds. The birds are very affectionate and often perch on the same branch.
Chick rearing is largely cooperative, with both males and females sharing various nesting, hatching, and feeding duties. Both parents take turns feeding the chicks throughout the night, as these birds are nocturnal and rarely active during the day.

What do Tawny Frogmouth eggs look like?
The tawny frogmouth eggs are pure white, 37-51mm long and 25-34mm wide.
How long does it take for Tawny Frogmouth eggs to hatch?
The hatching time for the tawny frogmouth fish is about 28 to 32 days. Both parents incubate the eggs, although the female is thought to do most of the incubation.

How many babies does Tawny Frogmouth have?
Female tawny frogmouths lay an average of 2 to 3 eggs per year during August, December or January, although this varies in southern and northern Australia.
If all the eggs hatch, they will have 2 or 3 babies, but usually at least one egg does not hatch or a chick dies before fledging.
When do Tawny Frogmouths spawn?
Most tawny frogmouths breed between August and January, a long breeding season compared to the traditional spring breeding season in the northern hemisphere.
Most eggs are laid between September and December, but southern birds may lay eggs twice a year.

How long will tawny frogmouth pups stay with their parents?
The nesting period of the tawny frogbill chicks is very long, only more than one month. Their parents then feed them for a few more weeks after leaving the nest.
Teenagers stay close to their parents for a few months to a year, at which point they become independent. The tawny frogmouth reaches sexual maturity at around 12 months.

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
