A Mary Sue will fulfill at least 3 of these qualifications, and frequently all 5 .
Bella Swan from Twilight is much hailed as the original of all Mary Sues. She is described to look much like the writer, Stephanie Meyer. Her alone significant flaws are being clumsy ( which everyone finds cunning ) and grizzle ( which draws her significant love interests in more ). She is described as complain, but everyone reacts to her as if she the most beautiful female child in school. not only do her two main love interests, Edward and Jacob, fall for her immediately, but thus do several of the other guys, like Mike, Eric, and Tyler. Her character does not importantly grow or change, not alone not good in Twilight, but besides in the rest of the series .
Some Mary Sues are disguised as badasses. They ’ ll still fulfill most ( if not all ) of the previously established qualifications, but will probable be highly talented or intelligent with no evidence of influence behind it to have gotten this way. This would be like a witch who didn ’ metric ton know she was charming, and when she found out, she was amazingly knock-down and had impressive master over it, or a woman who turns into a skilled fighter in a time of need, with no prior know or train.
In fact, the terminus Mary Sue comes from one such example. It was a parody Star Trek fanfiction entitled A Trekkie ’ mho Tale. It aimed to illustrate the sort of wish-fulfillment self-insert characters that were populating by tween girls at that time. The protagonist is a fifteen-and-a-half year old deputy of a Starfleet, the youngest always, and all of the crowd are madly in sexual love with her and admire her skill and intelligence .
The biggest problem with Mary Sues is that they are much ailing written. Authors much get caught up in the wish-fulfillment, and forget that characters need to be flawed and substantial. They need to have personalities ; they can not be everyone ’ south ultimate fantasy. We ’ ve talked about how to write strong female characters before, so we won ’ thymine go besides in-depth here. ( besides, there are male Mary Sues as well, but none of the names for them—Gary Stu, Marty Stu, Larry Stu—have actually stuck, and they aren ’ t about discussed a a lot as a Mary Sue. )
All of this international relations and security network ’ triiodothyronine to say that Mary Sues are inherently bad. They can be used efficaciously if the goal is to put the reader in the character ’ sulfur place. If a character is a self-insert, an idealize version of the generator, a reader may find a lot of their own idealized adaptation of themselves. If the record is a first person narrative, then readers will find themselves imagining themselves as your protagonist. This is a capital way to use a Mary Sue. Many would argue that this was a huge separate of the allure of Twilight ; when reading it, we see the global through Bella ’ second eyes, so it wasn ’ thyroxine just wish-fulfillment for the writer, but besides for the lector .
Another way is to make Mary Sue a smaller quality. Imagine reading a book with a all-around, fleshed out protagonist, with her own story and struggles—but her best ally, roommate, or rival is a mary Sue. That could be the grain that grows a whole sub-plot, surrounding the jealousy or feelings of inferiority or inadequacy next to Mary Sue, allowing your supporter to grow as a person and overcome those feelings .

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
