Owls are opportunistic hunters, meaning they prey on anything available, unfortunately for hares this includes them and many other small rodents and large mammals.
They are also mostly nocturnal, meaning that they do most of their hunting at night. Combined with their excellent eyesight, hearing, speed, precision and patience, this makes owls extremely successful predators.
Due to the size differences of different owl species, they can all bear different weights. An example is the great horned owl, which can carry up to four times its own body weight. This means they are capable of carrying the largest rabbits and hares. On average, hares weigh 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms), and hares weigh about 9 pounds (4 kilograms).

How do owls hunt rabbits?
Owls primarily prey on rabbits while grazing outdoors. They usually perch on a branch and wait patiently. When the rabbit is not panicking, the owl will quietly swoop down and attack the unsuspecting unfortunate rabbit with powerful and sharp claws. I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
