Photographer Lisa Bell was camping on Vancouver Island when she captured the avian throwdown. At first, the eagle looked to be winning, resting on top of an obviously stunned Canada Goose. obviously, however, the goose was merely preparing a clever rope-a-dope defense, as the future few photos show the dame making a daring get off from its manque predator. The eagle chased its meal to a nearby pond where, according to Bell, the goose columba deep submerged whenever the bird of prey approached until it finally gave up and flew aside .
While it ’ s not unheard of for a Bald Eagle to attack a goose in open water, says naturalist and Audubon Field Editor Kenn Kaufman, “ [ eagles ] do n’t seem to have identical good success at catching [ fathead ]. typically, the goose evades capture just the way this dame did. ” He further notes that Bald Eagles chiefly eat fish, but that their diet can vary greatly depending on what ’ randomness available and does sometimes include big birds like gulls, mallards and, yes, the casual goose.

The Bald Eagle ’ s black get the better of wouldn ’ thymine have surprised natural scientist and founding father Benjamin Franklin. In his public opinion, the eagle was “ ’ a Bird of bad moral Character [ who ] does not get his Living honestly. .. he is generally poor and frequently very icky. Besides he is a rank Coward. ” In other words, America ’ s national boo may be all spit and vinegar when attacking a knocked out or sleeping goose from behind, but would much prefer a meal of carrion than something that puts up a fight .

The Canada Goose, on the other hand, has a repute for ferocity and courage in refutation of its district or family. This is true across many cultures—in China, for case, geese are a potent symbol of marital fidelity, loyalty, and courage. possibly most importantly, while goose may have an aggressive reputation, cipher has ever accused a goose of snatching and eating Mr. Whiskers .
The Bald Eagle is the U.S. national dame, and while Canucks have n’t chosen a national bird even ( vote is however open ), the Canada Goose has “ Canada ” right in the name. Determining what, if anything, these birds ’ characteristics say about the character of the nations that they symbolize is left as an exercise for the lector, but hopefully this meet doesn ’ thymine carry any thick geopolitical symbolism. After all it ’ s worth noting that, as residents of Vancouver Island, both birds are most likely canadian anyhow .
I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
