We all know about bird poop, it’s so conspicuous and it seems to be everywhere, but have you ever thought about how birds fart? We put together this article to answer all your questions about farts and birds!
So, do birds fart?
In general, the short answer to this is that birds don’t fart. Birds have the anatomy and physical abilities that are able but not necessary. Unlike other mammals that expel wind (gas) through their anus, there is no solid evidence that birds do the same.
Why can’t birds fart?
Birds digest food much faster than humans and other mammals. Their guts are relatively short compared to land mammals of similar size.
Since they poop so often (some species every 5 to 15 minutes), there is not enough time for digested food to ferment and generate wind (gas). Another factor was the lack of gas-causing bacteria in the birds’ guts.
Do birds fart from their beaks?
Ornithologists aren’t sure whether birds can burp to release unwanted gas. However, scientists believe that if a bird does want to burp, there’s nothing wrong with doing so.
Since birds don’t have the same gas-producing bacteria as mammals, they don’t really need to burp.
Do birds fart when they poop?
It’s unclear whether birds fart when they poop. But did you know that birds poop and pee at the same time?
Depending on size and species, defecating may occur frequently, with some birds feeling the need to defecate every 15 minutes.
Urine and stool are excreted from the urinary and digestive tracts together. They pass through the cloaca and out the vent.

Can parrots fart?
Some species can mimic human voices, imitating sounds they hear in their homes. So it’s no surprise that parrots fart.
Parrots can change the depth and shape of their syrinx (vocal organ) and produce many different sounds, such as telephone ringing, running water and dogs barking.
African gray parrots have been known to be exceptionally talkative and have been hailed as one of the most imitative birds on the planet. They also enjoy interacting with their human owners.
An African gray parrot named Alex is known the world over for his ability to talk. He has a vocabulary of over 100 English words and can recognize differences in shapes and colours. His achievements have earned him a lot of media attention.

Do chickens fart?
Generally speaking, chickens fart. Just as humans and other mammals need to fart and burp occasionally, chickens are an exception when it comes to farting in birds.
It’s not yet known if chickens fart when they fart, but many chicken owners have confirmed that they definitely produce a very bad smell when they fart.
Unlike other birds, chickens take longer to digest and process their food. Certain types of foods, such as beans and vegetables, can cause excessive gas buildup and cause flatulence, so it’s best to avoid overfeeding these foods.

Chickens are one of the only birds that fart
Do Brazilian thrushes fart?
The Brazilian thrush (Zoothera lunulata) is an unassuming bird that is rumored to locate earthworms and other insects by repeatedly farting while foraging and eating. It is said to startle its prey into movement and give them away by farting directly at them.
In 1983, a bird watcher reported noises coming from the tail of a thrush as it searched for worms. But is this a fact, or a myth?
According to the book Extreme Birds: The World’s Weirdest Birds and book Janet Levy’s Kiwiit is believed to be true, however, there may be another explanation!
A paper by JSL Edington, September 1983, concerning a study carried out between 1981 and 1982, may take a different view on this topic. In a paper titled “White’s Thrush: Some Aspects of its Ecology and Feeding,” Edington states the following:

Brazilian thrush feeding on the ground
“A jet-like sound, slightly louder than a bird’s footsteps (clearly audible at 5 meters and lasting less than 0.25 seconds), produced immediately after the bird stops and then begins to detect or more Jumping on the ground. Simultaneously with this noise is a pronounced downward movement of the exhaust area (“exhaust dipping”), very similar to that of a betrayal. At this point the legs and paws are motionless, as is the head and beak. At a single point There is no “vent dip” between closely spaced probes on the upper body. Before moving to a new location (or before another “vent dip” if the bird is not moving) there will be a slight quivering of the body and tail, usually It is five or six quivering. If foraging is more intensive, such as when chasing a specific worm, the quivering will occur every third of a second; if slower, every second at most. Each quivering is accompanied by a very Soft sound, somewhat similar to inhalation. Only one with no tremors or less pronounced tremors. When the bird is not eating 9i.e. when sitting on the nest, on alert or perched) No such noises, tilts Movement or trembling. The head remains motionless and often cocked, rarely pointing towards any probe set that is proven to be pointing. This posture adapts rapidly before and after each unsuccessful single probe.”
Another five-year study confirmed similar observations to Eddington’s 1983 study in the Lofty Ranges of South Australia.
It is therefore likely that the strange farting noises heard and reported by Australian birders have indeed been mistaken for “spraying water”, however, we will leave the reader to draw his own conclusions.

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
