common problem
There are more than 60 known species of hawks on every continent except Antarctica. These elegant and powerful hunters are among the largest birds of prey in the world, some weighing over fifteen pounds. Eagles have been revered by cultures across the globe for thousands of years, but are they really dangerous to humans?
Most people have nothing to fear from Eagles. Larger species can of course cause serious or even life-threatening injuries to humans, although this is extremely rare. The only times an eagle is likely to attack is when it is trapped, cornered, or when its eggs or chicks are threatened.
Eagles are notoriously dangerous, and you only need to look at their powerful talons to see why. However, these birds pose little threat to humans if left undisturbed. In fact, these majestic birds fear us far more than we fear them.
Eagles can hunt surprisingly large prey, and archaeological evidence even suggests they may have preyed on the children of early hominids, such as Australopithecus africanusThe largest hawks still prey on animals over 10 lb (4.5 kg), so small pets may be hunted on rare occasions.
This article separates fact from fiction about the dangers of eagle strikes. Read on to find out whether these birds are a danger to humans and what you can do to avoid an attack.

Generally speaking, eagles do not pose much of a threat to humans, and such attacks are extremely rare
How do eagles protect themselves?
Adult eagles have few natural enemies, but they are well equipped to fend off enemies. Read on to learn how eagles protect themselves.
flight
Like all birds, the eagle’s first line of defense is flight. For example, Golden Eagles can reach speeds of 80 mph (129 km/h) in level flight.
But what if the eagle can’t escape the enemy? Read on to learn about the most effective weapons for eagles.
claws
If escape is not possible, the eagle will face the enemy head-on and defend itself with its talons. To do this, the bird may need to lean back, supported by its tail, or lie on its back, supported by outstretched wings and outstretched talons.
Eagles have four sharp talons (claws) on each foot, which are their most dangerous weapons. They normally use their talons to catch and kill prey, but eagles don’t hesitate to use them in self-defense.
Not only are their talons large (more than 4 inches in the harpy), but they also swing with great force. It’s not easy to gauge how strong an eagle is, but bald eagles have been estimated to have a grip strength of an impressive 300 pounds per square inch.
beak
Eagles use their talons to protect their heads and other vulnerable body parts from harm, but they also have a last resort if their talons aren’t enough to deter an attacker. Eagles have large, sharp beaks that they use to kill and eat their prey. Their bills can open the skin and slice through the flesh, and a single bite could cause serious injury.

When did the Eagles get aggressive?
Eagles would rather run than fight. However, in some cases, they can be aggressive.
Eagles usually only attack when they are cornered or trapped and cannot escape. However, they may also engage in aggressive behavior towards predators and humans approaching their nests. Some hawk species also use aggression to intimidate other animals and steal their prey.
Are eagles aggressive towards humans?
Eagles are rarely aggressive towards humans unless provoked. However, unusual attacks on people by juvenile bald eagles have been documented, so you should always treat these birds with the respect they deserve.

Are eagles aggressive towards other birds?
Eagles can be aggressive towards other birds for a variety of reasons. Read on to learn more about Eagle aggression.
prey
Many hawk species include birds as part of their diet. For example, the American bald eagle often feeds on waterfowl, including larger species like snow geese. These opportunistic hunters even hunt other predators, such as the great blue heron, from time to time.
nesting defense
Sometimes the situation is reversed and eagles must use aggression to protect their eggs and chicks from other birds. The following birds pose a threat to nesting eagles in the United States:
- seagull
- crow
- crow
- great horned owl
Theft Parasitism
Many eagles will steal prey from other birds rather than catching it themselves. Bald eagles have been known to steal food from other raptors such as ospreys and red-tailed hawks. These aggressive birds also steal food from mammals such as foxes, otters and even humans.

What would you do if an eagle attacked you?
Eagle strikes are very unusual, although there are documented cases where they are possible. So how do you protect yourself from eagles?
An eagle’s talons are its deadliest weapon, followed by its beak. If an attack occurs, try to cover the bird’s eyes with clothing and run away. If you cannot get rid of an attacking hawk, seek help and try to protect the bird’s feet and head to prevent further injury.
Eagles rarely attack for no reason. Remain calm, assess the possible cause of the attack, and if the bird is defending itself or its nest, leave the area.
Do eagles fight to the death?
Eagles are highly territorial and armed with such powerful weapons, conflict can be deadly. They don’t usually fight to the death, though they may succumb to their injuries after the fact.
In some cases, eagles lock their talons in flight and do not release them until they plummet to the ground below. These crashes were not necessarily fatal, although there have been reports of bald eagles locking their talons during the fight, falling into the water below and drowning.

What are eagles afraid of?
Eagles are afraid of humans and large predatory mammals such as wolves and bears, although they are generally fearless around other birds. Healthy adult eagles have few predators, although old, sick or injured individuals are vulnerable to many predators.
Of course, not all eagles are as large and powerful as such well-known species as the golden eagle. Some species, like the Old World boot hawk, are much smaller and have more potential enemies.
Are eagles friendly to humans?
Eagles are generally afraid of humans and will avoid encounters, especially in wilderness areas where they are not used to our presence. However, falconers have been taming and raising falcons for centuries.
Practitioners of this ancient hunting technique certainly developed close bonds with their birds, though calling them friendly might be a bit of a stretch.
What is the most dangerous eagle?
While most eagles pose little threat to humans, many larger species can cause serious injury if they attack. The following species frequently hunt large prey and can seriously injure humans:
- golden eagle
- harpy eagle
- Philippine eagle
- crowned eagle

Has an eagle ever killed a man?
Although the media reported a fatal attack on a child in Ethiopia in 2019, eagle attacks are uncommon. However, humans have lived in the same environment as wild eagles since the dawn of time, so this encounter has probably happened many times.
Can an eagle crush a human skull?
It’s hard to say how strong an eagle’s grip is, although estimates put their maximum strength at around 300 – 400 psi. Eagles are unquestionably powerful predators, but they are not strong or large enough to crush a human skull.
Can eagles catch people?
The largest hawks can carry a human baby. However, adults and even children are too heavy for Eagle to lift or carry.

Do eagles attack people’s eyes?
Eagles rarely attack humans and are not known to aim for our eyes. However, your eyes are especially vulnerable in an attack.
Do eagles attack cats?
Larger hawks can take on adult house cats, although felines are a dangerous food item. Pet owners need not worry about hawks, as attacks on pets are very rare.
Do eagles attack dogs?
Eagles rarely attack dogs, although some large species can prey on puppies and small breeds. Canids are not typical hawk prey, although Mongolian hunters are known for hunting foxes with trained golden eagles.
Do eagles eat human children?
Eagles are capable of preying on human babies, although this rarely, if ever, happens. Of course, babies should not be left unattended near hawks or any other wild predators.

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
