The pesticide DDT and illegal hunt contributed to the bird of prey ’ s population descent in the mid-20th hundred. In 1967, the bald eagle appeared on the first-of-its-kind union endangered species number .
“ They ’ re kind of these icons of the first endanger species that were listed in the federal Endangered Species Act, ” said Margaret Fowle, a conservation biologist for Vermont Audubon .
“ When DDT was rampant in use in the mid-1900s, populations of birds at the exceed of the food chain declined dramatically, ” she said. “ It ’ s truly important that these birds were able to tell us that floor. ”
In the past 15 years, the bald eagle population in Vermont has grown exponentially .
“ In the submit of Vermont, we had our beginning breed pair in 2008, ” said Doug Morin, a wildlife biologist for the state of matter who focuses on nongame birds. “ As of 2020, we had 64 chicks fledged out of 37 breeding pairs. ”
As a leave of the birds ’ population emergence, the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences in Quechee, which provides godforsaken shuttlecock rehabilitation, has seen an inflow of bald eagles .
“ Twenty years ago it was a curio, ” said Grae O ’ Toole, director of the center for crazy dame rehabilitation. The kernel has taken wish of eight bald eagles good in the past match of years, O ’ Toole said .
Bald eagles prefer hunting along water bodies, according to O ’ Toole. popular spots in Vermont include along the Connecticut River, around Lake Memphremagog and in the Champlain Valley .

Fish & Wildlife listed the american bumblebee and a species of fresh water mussel called the digest floater as endangered, and added the Eastern meadowlark to the endanger number, which means that it ’ sulfur at risk of becoming endangered without timely conservation action .
distillery, conservationists ’ success with the bald eagle — and other previously endangered species such as the common loon, osprey and mobile falcon in Vermont — shows that positivist change is possible .

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
