They are not called the kings of the jungle for nothing! Lions are incredible creatures and are considered one of the few top predators. Lions hunt alone or in groups. Usually, in a joint hunt, the lioness will attack. When their prey is close enough, lions will chase it and make a quick dash at it, trying to jump on it or push it down.
A lioness has earned herself and her pride a fresh lunch with an impressive kill. Soon, a group of hyenas surrounded the big cat. Lions and hyenas have the same territories, hunt the same food, and devour the same dead animals. As a result, they compete for food, chase each other, and sometimes even kill each other’s young.

Although lions outweight hyenas by a large margin, this lioness is at a disadvantage due to her sheer numbers. At one point, the lioness even ran away from the laughing hyena. They are known for their high-pitched “laugh” sound, which consists of a series of short, giggling-like sounds.
These sounds are usually made when they are in danger or under attack, rather than being associated with hyenas having fun. Hyenas also make laughter-like noises when frustrated.

Because lions are top predators, they rank higher than hyenas in the wilderness food chain. They don’t have to worry about being prey to other animals. Male lions are also very territorial.
The pride’s territory is defended by males who mark the area with urine and roar wildly to scare off tourists and drive off animals that trespass on their territory. The main hunter and leader of the lion pride is the lioness.
Lions are more powerful than other big cats. In terms of strength, a lion’s bite is four times stronger than a human’s. They can lift ten times the weight of ordinary people. The lead male of the pride ran up to the pack of hyenas and told them to stop eating.
They laughed in fear, cowering at the slightest movement of the big cat. Luckily for these hyenas, they got the pictures before any serious damage happened. A viewer’s comment on the video by the name of Tim says it all.
“The male walked peacefully to the carcass and they scattered. He hadn’t quite grown into a mane-horrifying lion, but the hyenas could recognize him and it was still a threat to them!”

I am broadly interested in how human activities influence the ability of wildlife to persist in the modified environments that we create.
Specifically, my research investigates how the configuration and composition of landscapes influence the movement and population dynamics of forest birds. Both natural and human-derived fragmenting of habitat can influence where birds settle, how they access the resources they need to survive and reproduce, and these factors in turn affect population demographics. Most recently, I have been studying the ability of individuals to move through and utilize forested areas which have been modified through timber harvest as they seek out resources for the breeding and postfledging phases. As well I am working in collaboration with Parks Canada scientists to examine in the influence of high density moose populations on forest bird communities in Gros Morne National Park. Many of my projects are conducted in collaboration or consultation with representatives of industry and government agencies, seeking to improve the management and sustainability of natural resource extraction.
